Citizens with severe disabilities who are leaving in the Republic of Cyprus are entitled to receive financial assistance for purchasing technical devices, disability instruments and other aids. The purpose of this allowance is to improve the quality of life for disabled people and facilitate their participation in the social and economic life.

How Much Is the Allowance for Purchasing Disability Devices?

The financial assistance provided covers 80% of the final cost of the required disability tool or aid, up to a maximum amount which is decided periodically based on the recommendation of a committee which examines the applications. Only in exceptional cases of people with very low income the allowance can be up to 100% of the final price.

How to Apply for such Financial Assistance?

In order to obtain allowance for purchasing technical devices, disability instruments and other aids an application form must be submitted to the Director of the Department for Social Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities, together with the following documents:

  1. a recommendation from a doctor or therapist regarding the necessity of the technical mean/ instrument/ aid;
  2. a document describing the object or/ and a photo of the object;
  3. minimum 2 proforma invoices or written offers from different suppliers of that specific object/ aid.

The applications are examined by a special committee presided by the Director of the Department for Social Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities or by an authorised officer of the Department for Social Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities. Representatives from other government services may take part in the committee if necessary.  In some cases the applicant may also be requested by the committee to attend personally.

People with the highest degree of disability and in need for a specific aid have priority in receiving the allowance.

Beneficiaries’ Responsibilities and Duties

The disability aids, tools or devices purchased through this allowance are provided on individual basis and belong to the beneficiaries. Institutions, organisations, schools or other persons are not entitled to assume them. In case these instruments or means are no longer used or in case the beneficiary passes away, they should be returned to the Department for Social Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities.

The allowance for purchasing technical devices, disability instruments and other aids does not cover the provision of orthotic or prosthetic limbs or other aids provided by the other government disability and illness benefits
