The Driving Licenses in Cyprus
In order to apply for a Cyprus driving license, you will have to prove that you have lived in Cyprus for at least 6 consecutive months. Application form TOM 7B should be submitted in person at the Department of Transport accompanied with the following documents:
- Residents permit
- A Utility Bill proving that you have been resident in Cyprus for six months
- Two passport size photos
- Original Passport and a photocopy of the passport (holders details only)
- In case of an exchange with an EU License, the original license an 2 photocopies of the license.
- The cost is €40. For applicants over the age of 65 years the license is issued free.
The Cyprus Driving License is valid in all EU member states and many other countries. If you are traveling outside EU check with the country you are visiting whether you need an international driving permit.
Full Cyprus licences should be the EU plastic photo card type. However they are currently using the old paper type.
EU Citizens that reside in Cyprus can drive with their full domestic EU license until it expires provided that their license is valid and they are above the age of 18 years. Additionally they can exchange their current EU license with a Cyprus driving license. (EU Directives prohibit a person to hold more than one driving license issued by an EU state)
Cyprus may refuse to recognize the validity of a driving license issued in another EU State where the holder has a licence that is restricted, suspended or revoked or cancelled in another State.
Cyprus has agreements with certain countries outside EU to exchange domestic licenses. These countries are listed below:
- New Zealand
- South Africa
- South Korea
- United Arab Emirates
Persons over the age of 55 years should renew their license.
License renewals for categories AM, A1, A2, A, B, B1, B+E the renewal is valid for 15 years.
License renewals for categories C, C+E, C1, C1+E, D, D+E, D1, D1,+E the renewal is valid for 5 years.
Existing Cyprus full paper licenses are valid until the expiry date on the license.
Licenses that need to be replaced or renewed, they will be issued under the new arrangements.
The earliest a driving license can be renewed is within the last month before its expiry.
Persons over the age of 70 years are required to obtain a signed TOM 153Γ from their doctor stating that they are fit to drive. The medical form should be obtained every 3 years.
Persons with disabilities are also required to obtain a signed TOM 153Γ from their doctor when they are applying for license categories C, C+E, D, D+E, subcategories C1, C1+E, D1, D1+E and special classes G, H, I.
