According to Eurostat reports, in November 2013 the unemployment rate in Cyprus increased to 17.3%, an all time high since 2000, after the 15.6% recorded in April 2013 and the 14.6% in December 2012. In the period 2000 to 2013 the unemployment rate averaged 5.58%, reaching the lowest point of 3.4% in March 2002 and the highest in November 2013.

Employed people who lost their job and voluntarily insured persons who work for Cypriot employers abroad and who paid their social insurance contributions can benefit of unemployment benefit from the Social Insurance Fund.
